KADIRS SUBSCRIBES TO TAX FOR SDGs INITIATIVE!!!

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 global goals adopted by all United Nations Member States. They are designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The Member states have committed to adopt these SDGs by 2030. 

Background. 
UNDP’s Tax for SDG initiative brings taxation to the center stage of the SDG agenda. Taxation plays a critical role in both encouraging and realizing the SDGs. The Initiative is designed to help governments take innovative approaches to taxation that will, on the one hand, improve domestic revenue mobilization to finance the SDG initiatives and, on the other, use tax policy tools to incentivize the achievement of the SDGs.

Why Tax For SDGs. 

1. Dwindling Fiscal Space - Tax and fiscal policies are critical in financing development.

2. Taxation is considered both a tool for revenue collection and a policy instrument to encourage sustainable growth strategies. 

3. A progressive and fair taxation system fosters good governance and establishes a deeper social contract.

4. Taxation influences behavior toward desired outcomes related to climate, nature, well-being, and other aspects of sustainable development.

SDG Taxation Framework (STF) : STF - Introduction

* STF is a comprehensive diagnostic tool designed for national Governments.

*Evaluates and provides tailored support to align a country’s tax systems with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

* It provides a benchmark of where the current tax policies stand and identifies areas needing assistance.

* Provides tools for evidenced based tax polices.

* STF identifies tax strategies that can effectively contribute to achieving specific SDG targets.

*Improves domestic resource mobilization through tax policy and tax administration interventions.

* Coordination mechanism between government as well as with development partners

Purpose of Tax for SDGs. 

The purpose of the STF is to bring greater focus on the critical role of tax policy and revenue administration in achieving SDGs by 2030.

Interconnection of Tax & MDGs :Bringing Taxation to the center stage of the SDG agenda.

A. Can improve domestic revenue mobilization to finance the SDG.

B. Tax policy tools can stimulate growth by promoting key economic sectors and broadening tax base.

C. Can correct disparities and promote equity.

D. Build social contract between citizens and the state.

E. International tax cooperation to counter harmful practices such as illicit financial flows and BEPS.

F. Can influence people’s behavior – promote sustainable consumption and production patterns

Expected Outputs of UNDP-SDGS Initiative. 

i. A digitized system of revenue administration in the state enabling Reduction of turnaround time and compliance cost, leakages and improvement in revenue collection.

ii. Well-informed Taxpayers and increased in voluntary compliance. Provide easy access to taxpayer information and Bridge the communication gap between KADIRS and Taxpayers.

iii. Improve the achievement of excellent standards to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in KADIRS.

iv The review and strengthening of the MTRS on tax administration and policy with a view to Providing continuity of revenue growth and sustainability.
