Progressive Youth Frontiers (PYF) Kaduna State chapter Condemnation of Vigilante Violence Against Hunters in Edo State.

We condemn the recent killings of hunters by vigilante groups in Edo State. This tragic loss of life represents a grievous violation of human rights and poses a serious threat to peace and security within our communities.

Hunters have historically played a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems and flourishing wildlife. These individuals often operate pursuant to traditional practices and cultural heritage, contributing to their communities in many affirmative ways. Any punitive actions taken against them must involve due process, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law. 
We call on the Edo State Government to:

1. Investigate the Incidents: Conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the recent killings, ensuring that those responsible for these acts of violence are brought to justice.

2. Strengthen Law Enforcement: Reinforce the capacities of legitimate law enforcement agencies to effectively manage wildlife crimes and community safety, preventing individuals from resorting to vigilante justice.

3. Promote Dialogue: Foster discussions between hunters, local communities, and law enforcement to address grievances, misunderstandings, and to find peaceful, mutually beneficial solutions to wildlife management and community safety.

4. Support Education and Awareness: Implement educational initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable hunting practices and the vital importance of biodiversity, fostering respect for both wildlife and the rights of community members.

5. Encourage Community Programs: Support the establishment of community-based programs that allow for lawful and sustainable wildlife management, preventing further conflict and promoting coexistence.

As citizens committed to justice and social harmony, we must advocate for actions that strengthen community ties rather than fracture them. It is imperative that we work collectively to address these issues in a manner that upholds the principles of justice, equality, and peace.

We implore all stakeholders—government, law enforcement, civil society, and community members—to work together toward a solution that respects life and fosters a safe environment for all.
