OPEN DEFICATION IN NIGERIA, MAL BALARABE ABBAS LAWAL READY TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVES. By: Abdulaziz Musa Alhassan. LLB, ACaSi, FYALI, MBABS.8/12/2023.

Open defecation is a significant issue in Nigeria, with millions of people lacking access to proper toilet facilities. This practice not only poses a serious threat to public health and the environment but also undermines the overall development and progress of the country. In an effort to address this pressing issue, the Minister of Environment, Mal Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has expressed his commitment to tackling the menace of open defecation.

According to recent reports, Nigeria has one of the highest rates of open defecation in the world, with an estimated 46 million people engaging in this unhygienic practice. This has led to a myriad of health problems, including the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid. Additionally, open defecation contributes to environmental pollution and degradation, further exacerbating the challenges faced by communities across the country.

In response to this alarming situation, Minister Mal Balarabe Abbas Lawal has outlined a comprehensive plan to eliminate open defecation in Nigeria. This plan includes a multi-faceted approach that involves increasing access to clean and sustainable toilets, raising public awareness about the dangers of open defecation, and implementing effective waste management strategies.

One of the key initiatives of the Minister's plan is the construction of new toilet facilities in rural and urban areas, particularly in underserved communities. By providing access to proper sanitation facilities, the government aims to curb the practice of open defecation and improve public health outcomes. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment is working to improve waste management practices and promote the use of eco-friendly sanitation technologies.

In addition to infrastructure development, Minister Mal Balarabe Abbas Lawal is also focusing on raising awareness about the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices. Through targeted educational campaigns and community engagement programs, the government aims to change attitudes and behaviors surrounding open defecation. By empowering communities with the knowledge and resources to adopt healthier habits, the Ministry hopes to create a culture of clean and sustainable sanitation practices throughout the country.

Furthermore, the Minister of Environment is collaborating with other government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private sector partners to mobilize resources and support for the eradication of open defecation in Nigeria. By leveraging the collective efforts of various stakeholders, the government is working towards achieving its goal of making Nigeria open defecation-free in the near future.

The Minister Mal Balarabe Abbas Lawal's commitment to tackling the issue of open defecation in Nigeria is a significant step towards improving public health, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable development. By implementing a holistic approach that encompasses infrastructure development, public awareness, and multi-sectoral collaboration, the government aims to eliminate open defecation and improve the overall well-being of its citizens. With concerted efforts and the support of the public, Nigeria is poised to overcome the challenges posed by open defecation and build a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
